A day in Calheta, Madeira- A mixture of culture, rum and beach pleasure

Calheta, een dorp aan de zuidwestkust van Madeira, strekt zich uit vanaf zeeniveau tot bovenop de klip waarmee het prachtige moderne museum zich lijkt te versmelten:

Ensuite je suis descendue jusqu'à la distillerie de rum:

Tijdens de suikerrietoogst, in de meimaand als het suikergehalte het hoogst is, wordt er nog steeds aguardente, witte rum, geproduceerd, een onmisbaar ingrediënt van de lokale "poncha":

During the harvest of the sugar cane, in the month of May, the machines are still used to produce white rum, an essential ingredient of the local drink called "poncha":

Het strand lonkte; ik was zodanig in conditie dat ik zowaar van het ene zandstrand naar het andere gezwommen ben (en te voet teruggekeerd weliswaar!):

The beach was attracting me. I was in such a good shape that I managed to swim from one sandy beach to the other (I returned on foot nevertheless!):

Op de promenade stonden banieren opgesteld met afbeeldingen van kunstobjecten. Bij nader inzicht betrof deze een gehaakte strandcabine in vrolijke kleuren, die mooi weerspiegelde in het strandwater, een werk van de Canarische kunstenaar Juan Gopar:

On the sea promenade there were banners depicting works of art. This one by the Canarian artist Juan Gopar showed a crocheted beach cabin reflecting nicely in the water:

Sur la promenade étaient érigées des bannières montrant des oeuvres d'art. Celle-ci donnait l'image d'une cabine de bain en crochet réflétant joliment dans l'eau:
