Aeolian shawl-Muga Silk

Deze speciale vlinder met een vleugelspanwijdte tot 15 cm, heet Antheraea assamensis en ligt aan de oorsprong van de mugazijde. Voornamelijk te vinden in Assam in het noordoosten van India en gekweekt in de buitenlucht voor de cocons gesponnen door deze rups:
This special butterfly with a wing span up to 15 cm, is called Antheraema assamensis and is the origin for muga silk. It is found mainly in Assam in the northeast of India and is semi-domesticated in the open air for the cocoons produced by these larvae:




Het garen dat ik gebruikt heb (zie vorige post) is gesponnen mugazijde, afkomstig van cocons na het uitvliegen van de vlinder; hierdoor wordt de lange zijdedraad onderbroken zodat hij niet meer kan afgerold worden. Als de cocons echter thermisch behandeld worden, sterft het insekt en kan de draad gehaspeld worden, hetgeen in principe aanleiding geeft tot een hogere kwaliteit. The yarn I used (see previous post) is spun muga silk, from cocoons which have been left by the insect. Thus the silk thread is broken and can't be reeled anymore. If on contrary the cocoons are heated the insect dies and the silk can be reeled. This results principally in a higher quality silk.
