Domovoi Folk Shawl from Cheryl Oberle-Blocking

Bij het opspannen van deze sjaal gebruikte ik voor het eerst de blocking wires die ik onlangs kocht bij Wolhemel in Groningen. Een stuk vast- of ander tapijt blijf ik hiervoor ideaal vinden.
For the blocking of this shawl I used for the first time the blocking wires I bought at Wolhemel in Groningen. I still prefer a carpet as an underground:

De tip van de puntjes zet ik liever vast met een speld i.p.v. de wires erdoorheen te steken omdat je ze op die manier echt kan vastpinnen in de ondergrond:

Domovoi Folk Shawl from Cheryl Oberle-Oeps, foutje. Correcting The Mistake.

Het breien van het rechthoekige middendeel van deze sjaal was niet echt moeilijk: het gaat om een gaatjespatroon met eenvoudige streepjes. De boord rondom wordt er dwars aangebreid door om de 2 naalden de laatste steek van de rand samen te breien met een randsteek van het middenstuk. Toen ik de sjaal wilde blokken was er toch wel zeker een gaatje dat aan mijn aandacht ontsnapt was en in een andere richting wees! (Deze bekentenis zal mijn reputatie als kantbreister geen goed doen vrees ik):
The knitting of the central panel of this shawl was not really difficult: a simple lace pattern with oblique stripes. The outer border is knit perpendicularly to this by knitting together the last stitch with a stitch of the panel every two rows. When I began blocking the shawl I saw to my horror that one of the holes escaped my attention and was placed in the wrong direction! (I fear that my reputation as a lace knitter will be damaged by this confession):

Een hachelijke brei-operatie drong zich op. Het maken van een incisie door gewoon in het breiwerk te knippen was op zich al traumatisch. De randen werden uit elkaar gehouden d.m.v. kabelnaaldjes:
A risky knitting operation was indispensable. Making the incision by cutting into the shawl was an traumatic experience. The edges were retracted by cable needles:


Na het herstellen van het patroon (gaatjes mazen i.p.v. ze te breien is niet echt vanzelfsprekend) diende alles zorgvuldig te worden gehecht:
After repairing the pattern (darning holes instead of knitting them is not the easiest thing) some careful suturing was necessary:

Domovoi Folk Shawl from Cheryl Oberle-Start

Een tijdje geleden vroeg mijn moeder om haar eens een knusse sjaal te breien, niet echt ragfijn, meer iets om comfortabel om zich heen te wikkelen. De Domovoi sjaal uit het boekje over volkse sjaals door Cheryl Oberle zou het worden. Domovoi zijn huisgeesten uit de Russische folklore. Als het huishouden goed gerund wordt zijn ze onschuldig en zelfs behulpzaam; zo helpen ze soms 's nachts ongemerkt bij het spinnen of breien. Luie mensen daarentegen worden door hen lastig gevallen...

Some time ago my mother wanted me to knit her a comfortable shawl, not an ethereal cobweb but a stole to drape over her shoulder. The Domovoi shawl from the book Folk Shawls by Cheryl Oberle proved a good choice. Domovoi are Russian house spirits that are inocuous when order reigns and even helpful with spinning or knitting but are a nuisance to lazy people who are kept awake at night by these creatures...

Kruissteekmerklap-Cross stitch sampler

Twee dagen na het bezoek aan de merklappententoonstelling, kwam ik in het bezit van wat een handwerkster doorgaans als een grote schat beschouwt: een merk- en stoplap van rond 1890, gemaakt in Antwerpen. Acht soorten alfabetten en cijfers, vier schattige sierrandjes, 45 stoplapmotiefjes en een hele boord met biedermeier tafereeltjes:
Two days after visiting the sampler exhibition I became the happy owner of an authentic cross stitch and darning sampler made in Antwerp around 1890. Eight different alphabets and figures, 4 lovely border motifs, 45 darning examples and a whole section with Biedermeier scenes. It is an object that every embroiderer would cherish...
