Lilac Dream. Results.

This shawl is light as a feather:

As an extra edging I added a row of double crochet stitches as a coloured finishing touch and as a precaution against stretching:

Very wearable this light and not too big shawl:

After the quite interesting knitting process the Rata scarf in all its beauty:

From the following pictures you can see that the scarf drapes beautifully:

The scarf can be worn in different ways:

There are so many more beautiful designs to be discovered in the Wrapped in Lace book by Margaret Stove:

Only after blocking the scarf the subtlety of the pattern became obvious:

The pattern in the middle is inspired by weaving patterns of the Maori:

My assistant too was fascinated by the edging:

She was formal that this edging is called cat's paw, she is wrong however:

Not so easy to resist the temptation to remove the pins before the scarf is completely dry:

The knitting of my Rata scarf.

My Rata scarf was knit mainly on the terrace, knitting book in the Bookseat, with a nice cup of tea:

The Rose of Sharon was in full bloom and the flower buds were exactly the same colour as the knitting yarn:

Funny that the scarf looked like a small curtain after some time:

A nice surprise to find a skein of purple lace yarn of unknown composition with my purchase at The Gossamer Web:

From the wonderful Wrapped in Lace book by Margaret Stove I choose the Rata scarf:

The original edging was designed by herself and is based on the shape of the New-Zealand rata flower:

There is a subtle change in shade:

There are also tree of life patterns included:

Shetland Lace- Sampler Stole.

Joining a knitting club in 2005 was a real boost for my hibernating hobby and the gift from an expert knitter of my very first cobweb yarn in 2006 was the start of my passion for knitted lace. At the same time I was lent an authentic Shetland Lace of such a finesse that I was afraid to unfold it, a dear memory. With the yarn in question I knitted the Sampler Stole, a design from Hazel Carter:

Uitermate fascinerende patronen,
Utterly fascinating patterns,
Des motifs fascinants,

met draden die in alle richtingen lopen,
with threads running mysteriously in all directions,
and every row is different, on the back also:

It is lovely to see the renewed interest in Shetland Lace...

Around 1980 I came into contact with Shetland lace for the first time through this publication: a special number in Dutch of the German knitting magazine Die Masche about knitting traditions in Europe. Only recently did I discover that it was a translation of a Japanese magazine!

There are not only patterns (with clear charts like in all Japanese craft magazines) but also interesting articles. This one is about the isle of Unst where most precious Shetland lace has been made:

And then there were these pictures that I drooled over for years. Alas, the patterns are not included and I have never been able to trace the original Japanese magazine. The stole on the right bears a strong resemblance to the Unst lace stole in the Heirloom Knitting book by Sharon Miller. This is a real heirloom...

How I would like to knit a copy of that stole!
