Een dagje Brugge-Day trip to Bruges

On May 6th I spent a sunny day in Bruges. In the morning I went to pay a visit at 't Apostelientje in the Balstraat, because I wanted some linen yarn to make this crocheted shawl with collar:

The yarn was laying in the window on a piece of old lace. It is 100% linen yarn from Occidental Flanders:

The neighbourhood of Sint-Anna in Bruges has something of a village:

My attention was drawn towards some special chimneys:

At Scharlaeken I bought some embroidery yarn in attractive colour combinations:

In the window of the Chine store I discovered a vintage style tunic in lace knitting:

Verderop waren grappige speelgoedbeesten in machinebreiwerk te koop:

Further on some funny machine knitted animal toys:

After a delicious lunch at Narai Thai (seldom tasted such tender tuna), a visit to the local knitting group Naaldzang. The afternoon passed away like nothing. RedSamur was knitting in the round with Katia Azteca Kleur 7802 and held the circular needle in the position of a figure 8, must try this myself:

Ameria was knitting a cap in yarn from Caron, an American brand that we don't see often in Europe:

To finish the day a gorgeous ice coffee from Gelateria da Vinci. Is it Summer yet?

Sier(dr)aden-Knitted and crocheted jewelry: the final result

This is the final result from the workshop that I followed on May 5th: a bracelet crocheted in silk cordonnet thread, to which I added a string of leaves and small flowers in a Japanese crochet pattern:

As it was one of those glorious Spring days, I returned home on foot along the Ghent yacht-haven and the towing-path of Achtervisserij:

Everything was in full bloom, like a white Wisteria against a façade, a stray columbine in a vibrant hue and the bleeding hearts in my own garden:

Later this year, probably in October, a new book by Nancy Bush will be published on the subject of knitted lace of Estonia. I can hardly wait to view it, the cover in itself is so lovely:

Breien in Estland: van Pitsilised koekirjad tot Laminaria-Estonian knitting: from Pitsilised koekirjad to Laminaria

For some time now I have been fascinated by the rich knitting tradition of Estonia. Two books largely contributed to this: the extensive stitch dictionary Pitsilised koekirjad by Leili Reimann (ISBN 9985-54-016-6) and the excellent Folk knitting in Estonia by Nancy Bush (ISBN-13: 978-1-883010-43-0). When a shawl pattern was published in the last Knitty based on 3 stitches from the former book, I decided to get an immediate start by looking for the right yarn.
The shawl from Knitty was called
Laminaria, the scientific name for brown seaweed. When visiting my LYS, Stoffenidee in Ghent, my attention was called by a new arrival: Araucania Ranco nr 104 in shades of green and brown proved to be a good choice:

The shawl is knitted from the middle of the neck side; my Supervisor of Yarn approved of the ergonomic shape:

The knitting began to resemble a heap of brown seaweed indeed:

But the blocking process changed everything:

Pas dan kwam de stekenpracht tot uiting:
Only then the stitches showed in all their richness:

The shawl became the size I had projected, by adapting the pattern to a size between the shoulderette and the big shawl:
