Winkelen in Amsterdam is voor brei(st)ers niet denkbaar zonder een bezoekje aan de Afstap, als een cocon gevuld met wol, breiboeken en -instrumenten, waaronder ook de accessoires van Clover. Tevens is er borduurwol van Appleton te verkrijgen:

En dan belandde ik in het verleden: temidden van antieke vingerhoeden (de schoen is eigenlijk een speldenkussen),

zag ik tussen de prachtig bewerkte priemen een bijzonder stel breinaalden liggen, uit schildpad nota bene, nu natuurlijk volstrekt laakbaar om ecologische redenen:

and surrounded by beautiful stiletto's I discovered a special pair of knitting needles made from tortoise, nowadays unthinkable of course for ecological reasons:

et au milieu de poinçons pour oeillet j'ai remarqué une ancienne paire d'aiguilles à tricoter en tortue, totalement impensable aujourd'hui pour des raisons écologiques:

En ook aan deze schattige breinaaldendoppen (zilver, 1880, Duitsland) kon ik niet weerstaan:

De korte stalen breinaaldjes had ik reeds in mijn bezit, ik heb ze tot een halve mm dik. Vroeger -en ook nu nog- kwamen ze van pas voor kant- en miniatuurbreiwerk. De onderste naalden -uit been- werden voor het iets grovere werk gebruikt:

The short needles out of steel were already in my possession, they were used for lace and miniature knitting. My thinnest needles are 0.5mm. The white bone needles were used for thicker everyday knitting:

Van een mislukte Moebiussjaal tot een passende nekwarmer-From a unsuccessful Moebius scarf to a fitted neck-warmer

Toen ik 2 jaar geleden een poging ondernam om een Moebiussjaal te breien zonder enige ervaring vond ik het resultaat niet naar mijn verwachtingen. De sjaal bleef dan ook vaak ongebruikt in de kast:
Two years ago I made an unsuccesful attempt to knit a Moebius scarf but I did not like the outcome, I found it difficult to wear:

Het gebruikte garen, Transitions van Noro, was nochtans bijzonder: een mengeling van wol, zijde, cashmere, angora en alpaca en dit in subtiele kleurschakeringen:

Yet the yarn I used, Transitions from Noro, was really special: a mixture of wool, silk, cashmere, angora and alpaca and this in subtle colour variations:

Deze week zag ik de nekwarmer van Rei, eveneens gebreid in Transitions en zo kwam ik op het idee de Moebius terug boven te halen, twee maal rond mijn nek te wikkelen en zie, ik had een nieuwe nekwarmer. Zoals Rei op Ravelry schreef: Ik hou erg veel van een onverwacht resultaat!
On seeing the very nice neck-warmer from Rei, also made in Transitions, I remembered my abandoned Moebius, tried it on once more with two turns around my neck and it suddenly became a neck-warmer. Like Rei wrote on Ravelry: I always enjoy an unexpected outcome!

Herinnering aan een zomervestje-Reminiscence of a summer sideways cardigan

De azuurblauwe sjaal uit vorige post deed mij terugdenken aan de sideways cardigan uit Vogue Knitting die ik vorige zomer breidde. Phildar Tendresse bleek hier zeer geschikt voor:
The celestial blue shawl from last blog post brought back to memory the sideways cardigan I knitted out of Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer 2008. Phildar Tendresse was a nice yarn for this project:


De gebruikte steek gaf een mooi golfpatroon:
The stitch used resulted in a lovely wave pattern:


Het flapje dat bedoeld was voor de knoopsgaten heb ik weggelaten, het jasje sloot mooi zonder:
The flap used for the buttonholes was omitted, the cardigan closed nicely without it:


Een heel draagbaar zomervestje was het resultaat:

Swan Lake Stole/Mystery Stole 3-tweede keer*second version

Mijn tante uit Brugge was wég van de eerste Swan Lake Stole die ik gebreid heb. Voor haar verjaardag zou ze haar eigen exemplaar krijgen. Bovendien ken ik haar voorkeur voor lichtblauw. Na enig surfen op het internet kocht ik bij Pavi Yarns een streng Lane Borgosesia Cashwool. Heerlijke merinowol is dit, met een mooie drapering:
My aunt from Brughes favoured the first Swan Lake Stole I knitted. As a birthday present she has received her own stole. I knew her preference for pale blue. After some surfing on the internet I bought a skein of Lane Borgosesia Cashwool at Pavi Yarns. This is a lovely merino yarn with a nice drape:




Het blokken ging vlot, weliswaar met de nodige assistentie. Deze keer heb ik de vorm van de vleugel meer geaccentueerd dan in mijn eerste versie:

Miralda's Shawl-Finale

Na de vorige blogpost zou ik kort daarop de afgewerkte sjaal tonen. Mijn laptop besliste er anders over: beeldscherm was stuk met zodanige kosten ter herstelling dat een nieuw toestel voordeliger uitviel. Maar wat een rompslomp om alle programma's er weer op te krijgen en met de nieuwe software en Vista vertrouwd te geraken. En na twee dagen zonder internet weet ik dat ik echt niet zonder kan!
After last blog post I was going to show the finished shawl pretty soon. My laptop decided otherwise: the screen had gone dead and the repair costs were that high that it was cheaper to buy a new computer. It is still quite a fuss for me to get all the programs working again and getting accustomed to the new software and Vista. And two days without the internet showed me clearly that I can't do without it anymore!

Miralda's Shawl-Het breien-The knitting

Vanaf het moment dat ik deze sjaal uit Estland zag staan in Handwerken zonder Grenzen 149 was ik verkocht. De sjaal is afkomstig uit het pas verschenen boek van Nancy Bush over kantbreiwerk uit Estland:
The moment I saw this shawl pattern from Estland in the Dutch needle crafts magazine Handwerken zonder Grenzen, I was under the spell. The pattern comes from the new book by Nancy Bush on Knitted Lace of Estonia:



Het dunne garen dat ik onlangs kocht op Madeira leek mij best geschikt. De criteria van warmte en zachtheid werden uitgetest:
The thin yarn I bought on Madeira would be a good choice for it. The criteria of warmth and softness were tested and met:



De boord ziet er alvast veelbelovend uit. Intussen ben ik overgegaan op rechte naalden, dit leek mij toch gemakkelijker in het vooruitzicht van het breien van de nupps. Deze link toont een filmpje met Nancy Bush en Eunny Jang over deze gebreide nopjes die typisch zijn voor Ests kantbreiwerk:
The edging looks promising and in the meantime I switched my circulars for straight needles, they will give me more grip when attacking the nupps. Following link for a video with Nancy Bush and Eunny Jang about the way to knit these rather flat bobbles typical for Estonian lace:


Spoedig ontstaan er net bloemen uit het kantbreiwerk:

Het breien ging erg vlug, in een tiental dagen. En het blokken gebeurde onder druk:
It was a quick knit, some ten days in total. And the blocking was done under pressure:

When the knitting yarn comes from Capistrano...

Toen ik begin dit jaar de Habu stand bezocht op l'Aiguille en Fête, zag ik op een wolwikkel het woord Capistrano staan. Dit klonk mij bekend in de oren: op één van mijn vaders favoriete CDboxen door Harry James & zijn orkest, staat de song "When the swallows come back to Capistrano". De oude missiepost in San Juan Capistrano, Californië, is ervoor gekend dat de klifzwaluwen er elk jaar op dezelfde dag, op 19 maart terugkeren en er rond 23 oktober naar hun winterverblijf vertrekken in Argentinië.
When I visited the Habu booth early this year at l'Aiguille en Fête, I noticed the word Capistrano. It sounded familiar to me: one of my fathers favourite CDboxes, by Harry James & his orchestra, contains the song "When the swallows come back to Capistrano". The mission post at San Juan Capistrano, California, is well known for the legend that the cliff swallows return every year on the same day, March 19th and that in Autumn they leave for their winter quarters in Argentina on October 23d.

Er waren 2 soorten garen van Capistrano Fiber Arts: een 100% Tassar zijde bouclé garen, handgeverfd in vervloeiende kleuren en een 40% zijde/60% Kid Mohair mengeling:
There were two different yarns from Capistrano Fiber Arts: a 100% Tassar silk bouclé in melting colours and a 40% silk/60% kid mohair mixture:


Er was een patroon bijgevoegd voor een sjaal, waarbij beide garens tezamen verwerkt worden. Het ajourpatroon heb ik vervangen omdat ik de diagonale structuur van de steek meer wou laten uitkomen:
A scarf pattern was included, using both yarns together. I substituted the lace pattern because I wanted a more diagonal structure for the stitch:


Het resultaat is een hemels zacht sjaaltje:

Er is een leuke gekrulde rand aan:

There is a nice ruffle at the edge:

En zeggen dat ik nog een andere tint heb van dit garen, misschien verwerk ik dit in het voorpand van een vestje. De kleuren zijn zo subtiel dat ze de vergelijking met die van een orchidee kunnen doorstaan:
And imagine that I have another shade in this yarn, perhaps I'll incorporate this into the front of a jacket. The colours are so subtle that they resemble those of an orchid:
