Shetland lace-Ontdekking. Discovery. Découverte.

Het zal rond 1980 geweest zijn dat ik voor de eerste keer iets las over Shetland lace in een speciaal nummer van Die Masche, een Duits breimagazine. Het handelt over breitradities in Europa en pas onlangs ontdekte ik dat het een vertaling is uit het Japans!
Around 1980 I came into contact with Shetland lace for the first time through this publication: a special number in Dutch of the German knitting magazine Die Masche about knitting traditions in Europe. Only recently did I discover that it was a translation of a Japanese magazine!
La première fois que j'ai appris quelque chose sur la dentelle tricotée des isles Shetland c'était dans un magazine allemand des années 80 sur les traditions de tricot en Europe. Ce n'est que récemment que je j'ai appris que c'était d'origine unetraduction d'une publication japonaise!


Er staan niet alleen prachtige modellen in (met glasheldere schema's zoals in alle Japanse handwerkboekjes) maar ook boeiende artikels zoals dit over het eiland Unst waar de mooiste Shetland lace vandaan komt:
There are not only patterns (with clear charts like in all Japanese craft magazines) but also interesting articles. This one is about the isle of Unst where most precious Shetland lace has been made:

Al jaren kijk ik met afgunst naar de rechter foto maar het patroon zit er niet bij en nooit ben ik er in geslaagd het Japanse magazine op de kop te tikken.
And then there were these pictures that I drooled over for years. Alas, the patterns are not included and I have never been able to trace the original Japanese magazine. The stole on the right bears a strong resemblance to the Unst lace stole in the Heirloom Knitting book by Sharon Miller. This is a real heirloom...
Durant des années j'ai regardé avec envie la photo de droite mais ce patron-là n'st pas inclus et je n'ai jamais réussi à retrouver le magazine en japonais...

Ginkgo shoulderette

Die dag in Antwerpen liet mijn tante zich bij Julija ook verleiden tot enkele strengen zachtgroene Alpaca Silk van Blue Sky Alpacas en ze wou er een niet te groot sjaaltje mee breien. Samen zochten we een geschikt patroontje op Ravelry en de Ginkgo Shoulderette zou het worden. Breien deed mijn tante zelf, het blokken nam ik voor mijn rekening:
That day in Antwerp my aunt was with me and she equally choose the Alpaca Silk but in a subtle green shade this time. She wanted to knit a shawlette and opted for the Ginkgo Shoulderette. She did the knitting and left the blocking to me:

Het motief is niet te moeilijk en erg mooi van lijn, het doet ergens aan Art Nouveau denken:

Het was moeilijk om een keuze te maken uit al die mooie wol bij Julija maar de zachtrode kleur van de Alpaca silk van Blue Sky Alpacas deed mij overstag gaan:
It was not easy to choose between all those seductive yarns from last blog post but the soft red Alpaca Silk from Blue Sky Alpacas was too nice to resist:

In het Japanse boekje "Natural Crochet: easy to crochet" (ISBN: 978-4072729007) had ik een mooi boleropatroontje gevonden:

Maar de eerste pas viel tegen!
But trying it on was a desillusion!
Mais au premier essayage j'ai été déçue!


Zowel de bolero als het kleedje bevatten zijde en het jasje gleed continu van mijn schouders:
As well the bolero as the dress contain silk and the jacket was sliding continuously from my shoulders:
Le boléro et la robe contiennent tous les deux de la soie et la petite veste ne tenait pas sur mes épaules:


Van uittrekken kon geen sprake zijn, daarvoor had ik er al teveel tijd en moeite aan besteed. De kraag en de randen van de mouwen moesten er wel af en na veel denk- en paswerk vond ik een manier om de bolero met een speld als sjaal te dragen: twee puntjes opzij en een langer stuk in het midden:
Having to frog this project made me shudder as I had already done a lot of work on it. I removed the collar and the sleeve edgings and after some weeks! of procrastination I decided to wear it with a pin as a shawl, with two shorter point at the sides and a longer part in the middle:
Je n'avais vraiment pas envie de défaire tout mon travail. J'ai enlevé le col et les poignets, retourné le travail dans tous les sens et je me suis décidée à le porter en châle avec une épingle. Il y a deux pointes ples courtes sur le côté et une partie plus longue au milieu:
