For some time now I have been fascinated by the rich knitting tradition of Estonia. Two books largely contributed to this: the extensive stitch dictionary Pitsilised koekirjad by Leili Reimann (ISBN 9985-54-016-6) and the excellent Folk knitting in Estonia by Nancy Bush (ISBN-13: 978-1-883010-43-0). When a shawl pattern was published in the last Knitty based on 3 stitches from the former book, I decided to get an immediate start by looking for the right yarn.
The shawl from Knitty was called Laminaria, the scientific name for brown seaweed. When visiting my LYS, Stoffenidee in Ghent, my attention was called by a new arrival: Araucania Ranco nr 104 in shades of green and brown proved to be a good choice:

The knitting began to resemble a heap of brown seaweed indeed:

But the blocking process changed everything:
Pas dan kwam de stekenpracht tot uiting:Only then the stitches showed in all their richness:
The shawl became the size I had projected, by adapting the pattern to a size between the shoulderette and the big shawl:

The Estonian shawls are called Haapsalu Rätik, after the spa town of Haapsalu where they were popular by the tourists:

De toekomst zal uitwijzen of hier iets moois uitgroeit...Due to this lovely Spring weather something fuzzy began growing in my garden, probably blown by the wind from overseas. The colour is identical to the Charlemagne rose in the background...The future will reveal in due time if something beautiful develops from this...
Some time ago a doll's clothes accessory came into my possession, as an antique crocheted pulse warmer. For this it was made a condition that I should render an exact copy of it, which proved to be something of a challenge:
The antique original, in white, was copied using old yarn (stubborn and brittle) and a crochet hook of 0,5mm (the smallest crochet hook is 0,4mm and is often used in lace making to attach a new thread to the work):
De kwastjes waren ook in miniatuur:The size of the tassels, in miniature:
To acquire the basic skills for twined knitting we made a tiny sampler mitten that we could finish at home. Not only we learned to know the special cast on, but also the use of decorative stitches and several colours, the construction of the thumb and the way of casting off. Quite a challenge for some one like me always trying to avoid knitting in the round and never having knitted any mittens:
Ziehier de buitenzijde en de binnenkant van het werk:During the workshop it became obvious that the technique of twined knitting is a laborious one. The essence consists of continuously twisting the threads around each other, so that they get twined; this results in a much tighter fabric than with fair isle knitting. A picture of the outer and inner side of the work:
It is inevitable that the threads get entangled by this. For disentangling you fasten them to the ball, you let them hang free and unravel themselves. Or you can do it the other way by letting the knitting disentangle itself:
Eén ding is zeker: op deze "Witte Pasen" waren wantjes onontbeerlijk:One thing is certain: during this "White Easter" mittens were indispensable:

Lesgeefsters Carla en Hilly van The Dutch Knitters maakten er een leerrijke, arbeidsintensieve en toch ontspannen dag van:On March 22th last, together with Anne from KnitFlanders, I attended a workshop Twined Knitting in 't Wolwinkeltje in Leuven. Carla and Hilly from The Dutch Knitters made it into an instructive, labourious and -at the same time- relaxing day:

Buiten was het koud, grijs en winderig; even kwam de zon erdoor, misschien aangemoedigd door een enthousiaste Portugese volksdansgroep uit Vila Praia de Âncora (met fijne kousen en beenwarmers, dit terzijde):It was cold, grey and windy outside; at one moment the sun peeped through, perhaps encouraged by an enthusiast Portuguese folkdance ensemble from Vila Praia de Âncora (nice stockings by the way):
Wat de dag ook bijzonder maakte was de ontmoeting met andere breisters, waarvan ik sommige alleen kende van de Ravelry groep Knitters in Belgium: Line, Rei, en Wollig:What also made the day was that we met other knitters; some of them we knew only from the Ravelry group Knitters in Belgium: Line, Rei en Wollig:

Dominique from Leuven was also present, together with Bea and other members of the local knitting group. AnneV was also attending, as was Annie Wintein.De volgende post zal handelen over het resultaat van m'n harde inspanningen...Next post will treat of the results of all my efforts...
