Madeira, Paul da Serra-Assobiadores-Fanal

De catastrofale overstromingen in februari en de verwoestende bosbranden in augustus hebben ervoor gezorgd dat vele wandelingen op Madeira veiliger zijn onder begeleiding van een gids. Vandaar dit relaas van mijn deelname aan de nieuwe Fanal-Assobiadores wandeling van Madeira Explorers, hoogst aan te bevelen.

The terrible flooding in February and the devastating forest fires in August have made some walks on Madeira quite dangerous and walking with a guide is often advisable. Hence this account of the new Fanal-Assobiadores walk organised by Madeira Explorers. Highly recommendable!

Les inondations dévastatrices de février et les incendies de forêt du mois d'aout ont pour conséquence que beaucoup de promenades à Madère ne sont pas sans danger et plus sûres avec un guide. Slechts één huis in de hele omgeving, dat van de boswachter in Rabaçal. En zeggen dat er in deze ongeschonden omgeving een kabelbaan gepland werd. Gelukkig heeft Unesco daar een stokje voor gestoken:

Il n'y a qu'une maison dans la vallée, celle des gardes-forestiers. On avait projeté de construire un téléphérique dans cette vallée intacte. Heureusement le projet a été condamné par l'Unesco:

De boord werd met dubbele draad Evilla 8/1 gehaakt omdat de 8/2 niet meer beschikbaar was:

This thick bicolor vintage mother of pearl button was a find (I love rummaging among buttons, especially when they are displayed in an old drawer cabinet...):

Vooraleer deze blog helemáál om Madeira draait wil ik mijn vakantieproject tonen: een gehaakte midzomernachtssjaal, een patroon van Lisa Naskrent. Ik koos een streng Evilla Art Yarn 8/2 uit mijn wolvoorraad, vorig jaar gekocht bij Astrid's Dutch Obsessions:
Before this knitting and crochet blog is taken over entirely by Madeira, I will show you my holiday project: a crocheted Midsummer Night's Shawl, a pattern from Lisa Naskrent. The yarn chosen is Evilla Art Yarn 8/2:

En natuurlijk gebruikte ik een houten haaknaald van Laurel Hill om doorheen de controle op de vlieghaven te geraken:

Flower power:

Madeira-Spinnen. Spiders. Araignées.

Zo grote dieren als er in de oceaan rond Madeira zwemmen, zijn er aan land niet te vinden; het grootste dier is het konijn. Wel leven er kleinere maar daarom niet minder indrukwekkende creaturen zoals de wolfsspinnen. Ze zijn momenteel in het echt te bezichtigen in het aquarium van Funchal (klik op de afbeeldingen als je niet bang aangelegd bent):
There are no large animals on the island itself, the rabbit is the largest one. But smaller creatures like the endemic wolf spiders are just as impressive. For the moment they are on display in the aquarium of Funchal (click on the pictures if you dare):
Tant les animaux dans l'océan autour de Madère sont grands, tant sur terre il n'y a pas de grands mammifères, le lapin est le plus grand. Mais les créatures de taille réduite n'en sont pas moins impressionantes. Les araignées-loups par exemple, à voir pour le moment dans une exposition à l'aquarium de Funchal (cliquez sur les images si vous n'êtes pas peureuse):

Het was geruststellend dat er een glasplaat tussen de camera en de spinnen zat. De vier paar ogen zijn duidelijk zichtbaar:

It was reassuring to know that there was glass between the camera and the spiders. The four pair of eyes are clearly visible:

Assez rassurant qu'il y avait du verre entre la caméra et les araignées. On voit clairement les quatre paires d'yeux:

Nadien ging ik in de hoteltuin wat beter opletten en vond er deze Argiope trifasciata:
Afterwards I paid more attention in the hotel garden and found a banded garden spider:
Dans le jardin de l'hôtel j'étais un peu plus prudente après et cette Argiope trifasciata a retenue mon attention:

De draden van het web zijn verschillend van dikte. De zigzag-verlopende dikkere draden worden "stabilimenta" genoemd en versterken het web. Daarentegen zou er hierdoor een derde minder insekten gevangen worden:

Very performing these spiders, they can spin silk in cobweb and laceweight as you can see. Scientific papers have been written about the production of spider silk, here for example. The thicker threads are called "stabilimenta"; they strengthen the web but a third less insects are caught this way. Perhaps Harry, the spider living with Fleegle and well known among lace knitters and spinners, had taught this lady spider this method. His own beautiful yarns can be bought at the Gossamer Web:
