Countryside 2008

When the knitting yarn comes from Capistrano...

When the swallows come back to Capistrano".
When I visited the Habu booth early this year at l'Aiguille en Fête, I noticed the word Capistrano. It sounded familiar to me: one of my fathers favourite CDboxes, by Harry James & his orchestra, contains the song "When the swallows come back to Capistrano". The mission post at San Juan Capistrano, California, is well known for the legend that the cliff swallows return every year on the same day, March 19th and that in Autumn they leave for their winter quarters in Argentina on October 23d.

There were two different yarns from Capistrano Fiber Arts: a 100% Tassar silk bouclé in melting colours and a 40% silk/60% kid mohair mixture:

A scarf pattern was included, using both yarns together. I substituted the lace pattern because I wanted a more diagonal structure for the stitch:

Het resultaat is een hemels zacht sjaaltje:
The resulting scarf is heavenly soft:

Er is een leuke gekrulde rand aan:

There is a nice ruffle at the edge:

And imagine that I have another shade in this yarn, perhaps I'll incorporate this into the front of a jacket. The colours are so subtle that they resemble those of an orchid:

Madeira 10-09-2008

Houses, fields and vineyards are lying sheltered in the crater of an extinct volcano, of which the border has been eroded:

When trying to visit a certain garden, I found the gate closed. Like a fore-boding the clouds and the ocean seemed to touch:

It was a compensation that I could catch a glimpse of a stately Art Deco house with an imposing flight of stairs out of azulejos:

It is true that they were damaged but there was an image of a means of transport from the past; the traditional headwear of the ladies resembles a felted cap:

De symmetrische trap was imposant:
The stairs went to the left and the right and they were really impressive:

Bij terugkomst in de hoofdstad even langsgeweest bij de twee wol-, haak- en borduurgarenwinkels van de Rua dos Tanneiros, beide even kleurrijk en verleidelijk.
Back in town I visited the 2 yarn stores in the Rua dos Taneiros, both colourful and full of temptation.

First the window of Lãs Voga with a lovely table-cloth in filet crochet, some perlé yarn and skeins of embroidery yarn in attractive pastel colours:

The other store, Lãs Rosa, displays equally a kaleidoscope of wool for needlepoint:

Here I could not resist 2 colours of a wool/angora mixture, I already imagine airy and soft shawls in this yarn...

Finally relaxing and taking tea on a nice square. The tearoom has a menu of ice teas! And crumble with berries is one of my favourites.

This morning in the hotel garden the fallen petals of a
Tibouchina heteromalla caught my eye; they were still covered with dew:

The centre of the flower changes from white to red on aging:

The stamina resemble spider legs, so in native Brasil this is called spider plant:

De bloemknopjes zijn van een donker nachtblauw:
The flower-buds are a dark night blue:

And you keep looking at the leaves: they are slightly hairy, coarsely grained, with a special relief and they bear the most glorious autumn hues:

A colourful beginning of the day...
